Internal Linking Changes in WordPress 3.1

So I’m usually pretty “with it” as far as WordPress design goes, but I’m admittedly a little late to the whole WordPress 3.1 beta party. So after around a bit today I learned some pretty exciting things, partiuclarly for SEO.

One of the most exciting new features in WordPress 3.1 is the ability to search your already existing content when linking. This means that now, if you want to link to another page or post on your site, you no longer have to go and find the URL, and manually copy and paste it into your content.

The images below display how internal linking is done in WordPress 3.1 now.

The first picture is pretty business as usual. Highlight your text while you’re in Visual editing mode, and press the “Link” button. After that, you’re greeted by the new linking box, as seen in the 2nd picture.

From here, you press the arrow next to “Or link to existing content” to expand the box and show content on your site. You can search your content using the search bar, select it, and press “Add Link” at the bottom of the box to auto-fill the fields at the top of the box. It’s THAT easy.

This will save incredible amounts of time when internally linking content, especially for post and pages that have multiple internal links within them!

Note: I didn’t write this entry using WordPress 3.1, but I wish I had.
