Usability Standards for Web Videos

Recently, an article came out in regards to how usability standards for videos on the web are both few and far in between. This is indeed true. For the most part, usability between the user and the video owner, measures how successful the users’ video experience online with the video providers original intentions. In other words, did the video that was produced by Company A reach their intended market and did the user who found the video online get what they were looking for?

A lot of times we look for something online, we click a video link thinking that it would take us to the pieces of information we were looking for, but there are times when our expectations have not been met. We become upset that our online experience was not as it should be. That is user usability in motion. For other online experiences there is a checks and balances involved, but not for video. If there were standards for providing the best practices for videos on the web, then both the user and the video provider will be happy. Unfortunately a system is not in place as of yet and there is no telling if there will be one in the near future, but I think that it should be something to be looked into.
