Deadly Marketing Mistake #7: Law Firm Social Media That’s Not Social

If you are truly good at cocktail parties, you ask a lot of questions and are curious about people.  People like curiosity, especially when it’s about them.  According to Todd Kashdan’s Curious, you seem smarter, better looking, and all around ‘cooler’ by being curious (I added the cooler part but you get the drift).  You also pepper in current event conversation and possibly LIGHT debate, all within your story about yourself.  You play to the audience.

If you suck at cocktail parties, you talk about yourself and tell boring stories about work.  Even worse, you try to sell everyone you meet. Don’t do these things! It’s basic social common sense.

Social Media Is No Different

So why are you bombarding your social media with lengthy diatribes on accidents and the law?  It’s fine to write some of these as blog posts but do not abuse your social media followers with something less than social.

I see so many PI law firm sites that are irrelevant to anyone but attorneys.  That’s great, but I doubt these attorneys are going to hire you.

It’s fine to talk about yourself, and what’s going on.  People are curious. Just don’t rub it in their face.

Not sure where to start?  What’s your authentic story?  Start there.

Next, what is the story of your ideal clients?  Not sure?  Ask them.

Wait, were you about to broadcast a question?  Imagine walking into a cocktail party and asking, “What would you do if you were in an accident?” to the entire room.  That would not be too smart.

Make your social media just that.  Social.
