I have always been in awe of my mom’s energy and efficiency. She never forgets a deadline or allows a task to go incomplete. She managed to raise two boys, does most house related chores, manages the family finances, and works full time. She makes all of this seem effortless. I grew up in a small southern town where there were expectations about what boys did for hobbies and careers, yet my mom supported me taking dance lessons, performing in theater, and going to design school. This Mother’s Day I will celebrate my mom for loving me for who I am. I hope this Mother’s Day that every kid who is “different” can celebrate a mom or role model who celebrates their authenticity just like my mom does.

My mom is a superhero. She may not be your typical superhero, with a super cool costume, a mysterious secret identity, or any crime-fighting superpowers, but you better believe she’s still a superhero. The most resilient woman I know, she defends against the forces of evil with the largest, kindest, most generous heart around. Although it hasn’t always been easy between us, I understand that even superheroes have to make incredibly difficult decisions like the rest of us. I’d need a lot more than my fingers and toes to begin counting the amount of times she’s saved me from peril. Maybe not mortal peril, but it sure seemed like it at the time. I can only hope that one day I’ll be able to repay her for always rushing to my rescue.

It’s difficult to write about my mom in only a few sentences, there’s so much I want to say. My mom is a beautiful person inside and out. I admire her strength and selflessness. After beating cancer and then being hit by a drunk driver, leaving her disabled, she could have given up but she fought back and doesn’t let anything stop her on her lifelong road to recovery. No matter how much pain she is in, she always puts everyone before herself. I can truly say she is my hero, my best friend, and one of the strongest people I know. I love you, Mom! I sometimes find myself in a state of awe when I ponder what my mother has done for me throughout my life. From my lunches in elementary school that were the envy of my classmates to the sage advice she’s given me along the way my mother has always made me a priority. Before I had a child of my own I didn’t understand what “unconditional” love really meant – I knew the definition but I didn’t understand the practice. That, to me, is what mother’s day is all about; for one day a year we are given the time to reflect and appreciate the selflessness it takes to be a mother. That is a small consolation for the decades of guidance, love, and “mothering” we receive throughout our lives.

My parents were divorced when I was a teenager and my mom and I lived alone. As a result, we developed a bond of friendship, love and mutual respect that most of my friends were envious of. My mom always showed up for me as someone with quiet strength. She didn’t make herself the center of attention or ever made fuss, but she protected her family and the ones she loved with a force that amplified her love. Our bond strengthened when I had a child of my own and suddenly I understood her in a whole new way. My mom passed away a few months ago and I miss her dearly. She was my rock, my best friend and the woman I admire and want to emulate. I will honor her this Mother’s Day by being the best mom I can be to my little girl. I can’t even talk about my mom without getting all emotional and weepy. She’s just the greatest mom ever – she always puts me and my siblings first (and trust me, most days we don’t deserve it).
