SEO Strategy: Internal Linking

A necessary but usually overlooked SEO and linking strategy is: Internal Linking.

Internal links help lead your customers from one page to another within your website. It is different from your main or side navigation because it actually fits within the context of your content.

The risk of not having your site internally linked is that the spiders and crawlers that search engines use, may not properly index your entire site.  You want your customers to experience a natural linking process when perusing your site.  Internally linking provides them that solution.  Internal links can connect a reader from a page to a related blog post, or from a page to a contact form .

The three most effective internal linking methods are:

  1. Text links
  2. Links within the footer of each page
  3. Inline text links

Your keywords and anchor tags can be text links.   They can appear in the text of your content, but they can also appear in other locations around your web page. Just make sure the links are relevant to the page/content they are linking to.

Footer links are starting to become a common practice.  Footer links can link to popular pages on site, legal documentation, partner sites, and even geography oriented landing pages that you create.

Inline links are most commonly found within your content on your page. They can be links to other pages, blogs, or articles. To keep the flow of your content seamless, these links can be proper nouns or descriptors that relate to the pages they are being linked to.
