You don’t have to be an expert to see that most human beings love complexity and tend to make things like products, designs and even websites as complex as possible. What’s surprising about this is that as consumers and users, we all love simplicity. We generally visit a website with objectives in mind and the easier it is for us to accomplish these objectives, the more successful the design really is. All of that being said, achieving simplicity in anything can be an incredibly difficult task. All of the features we want to add often convolute the overall message we want to convey. This can cause much greater confusion to your clients. It is often much simpler to just throw everything onto the canvas expecting it all to work in perfect harmony. In truth, achieving simplicity can be a complex process.
“Don’t make me think.”
Here are three tips you can use to achieve greater simplicity in your business, websites and overall user experience:
- Focus on the essentials first, ask questions later. Make sure you are always focusing your efforts on the most important parts of whatever you’re designing. You can always add things later if absolutely necessary.
- Don’t get bogged down on features. Is the picture slider at the top of your home page really adding to the user experience? Remember to eliminate unnecessary features.
- The Rule of 3. It should take 3 clicks or less for a user to get anywhere on your site. As a rule of thumb use 3 fonts and 3 colors max. Obviously, these are only guidelines but I believe practicing the rule of 3 can go a long way in simplifying your designs. I even used the rule of 3 in this blog post!
