What is a Long-Form Content?
Long-form content is likely what you think it is. It is a large amount of content. Usually exceeding 1000 words, these meaty pages have plenty for the eye to feast on. These pages are known to work as Google uses it as one of their indicators of quality content. As you have hopefully read my preceding article about why long-form works, this should be no surprise to you. But the question is, are you using this power wisely? Having a long-form website doesn’t mean that every webpage you have a wall of text. In fact they are a pet peeve of most of your users. Now what can you do to use this knowledge wisely?
Images have the added benefit of speaking 1000 words in a single glance. They also add a bit of reprieve for those tired eyes glancing at blocks of text, making it seem as if your content is much smaller than it actually is. It also helps clarify the meaning of your content so it further ingrains itself into your user’s mind. You could also use the image’s natural focus to direct your users to the next piece of information. A study by eCommerce found that users remember 80% of what they see and only 20% of what they read.
Videos tell a story. They allow a large amount of information to be told about your business in a short amount of time, but more importantly, they are interesting. In an eye-mapping study by Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), videos and even their videos commanded much more attention. And of course, there is the added benefit that Google ranks videos higher. Videos are vital in engendering trust in your users but they also allow you to continue to keep your customers engaged in your website.
Break it Up
Instead of inundating your users with the content all at once, spoon feed them in byte sizes. It will allow them to pick and choose what is most important to them quickly and easily by dividing your content into groups. White space is your friend, by creating better legibility and readability it improves your readers comprehension.
