According to Wikipedia referral marketing is, “a method of promoting products or services to new customers through referrals, usually word of mouth. Such referrals often happen spontaneously but businesses can influence this through appropriate strategies.” In the past these “spontaneous” referrals were the lifeblood of many firms but now there are many other ways to maximize referrals to get more of the types of clients that you like working with. Why do we like working with referrals so much? Research has shown that referred clients are more profitable than those who are not referred and that they are much more loyal. I’m sure this isn’t anything Earth shattering in its revelation but it bears being said.

So how do you get more of these “super clients” for your practice? There are plenty of possible referrers in your network including alumni of your firm, law school friends, family members, networking associations, bar associations, your kid’s school, or even the gym. Depending on the type of law you practice you may find new referral sources in any number of associations, gatherings, or chance encounters. The real secret is not to rely on chance but to have systems in place to enhance your firm’s ability to garner more referrals.
